How Long Does it Take for a Tattoo to Heal?

So you’ve decided to get your San Diego tattoo, but maybe you still have a few questions. One of the most common questions we get asked is, “how long does it take for a tattoo to heal?” It’s an important question because after you go through the process to get the tattoo, you still need to put in the effort to properly care for new artwork.

How Long Does It Take For A Tattoo To Heal

The short and sweet answer is two to three weeks.

However, it’s important to keep several other factors in mind when trying to evaluate the healing time for your tattoo. First, even though it may be completely healed in that time, it could still appear to look a bit scaley or even a little bit shiny for a few additional weeks. Second, that 2 – 3 week healing time only applies to the top level of your skin; it will take anywhere from two to four months for all layers of your skin to be completely healed.

So what’s that mean for you? Well, if you’re just wondering when you can hop in the pool or take a dip in the ocean, then you’ll be relieved to know it’s only that 2-3 week timeline. If you’re looking to get additional work done on your tattoo or add on to it though, then be prepared for some serious extra pain since the skin beneath won’t be fully healed for several months.

Keep in mind that these timelines are all dependent on your tattoo not becoming infected and you not picking at the scabs. Proper maintenance and care for your tattoo are essential, that’s why at Electric Tiger Tattoo we make sure every person that comes in leaves with the knowledge they’ll need. It’s just one of the reasons why we pride ourselves on being one of the best tattoo shops in San Diego.
